Research Safety Culture
From 2019 to 2022 a small team and I were entrusted with answering a University challenge to promote research safety resources.
This team has employed creative problem solving and strategic communications to execute print and digital tools to increase University awareness of research resources and grow safety compliance. This effort was guided by a communication approach that garnered three national marketing awards (2020 awards, 2021 award).
"The Research Safety Culture Program at Colorado State University owes a great debt to Lauren and her team for providing the communications support that helped launch a university-wide program." - Anthony Appleton, Research Safety Culture Coordinator at CSU
My Involvement:
Assisted Office of the Vice President for Research leadership in drafting the RSC program mission statement.
Created and designed the RSC Program website with simple navigation and Search Engine Optimization.
Produced a social media plan utilizing Twitter best practices and methodologies to grow CSU's research safety specific account. 209 followers in 12 months.
Worked with leadership to publicize the new RSC website through email communications.
Oversaw the production of the RSC YouTube video playlist to introduce all directors involved in research safety and give research safety a "face".
Aided in developing research safety scripts and talking points for CSU leadership.
Assisted my digital media intern team member in coordinating a RSC Podcast episode aired on KCSU, CSU's radio station.
Partnered with the RSC coordinator and University Creative Services to create a 40 second video showing the diversity of safety.
Conceptualized the RSC Safety Folders, for researchers to have all research safety and emergency information in one location.
Worked with leadership from the Office of the Vice President for Research and University Communications to design and distribute the Safety Folders to faculty, research staff and postdoctoral students.
Assisted the RSC and the Research Integrity Compliance Review Office in developing and promoting the Responsible, Accountable, Mindful (RAM) Safe Pledge and Research Safety Goggle award to encourage research lab members to make a unifying commitment to practice research safely.
